Is it safe to put company data into an AI model?
Short answer
It can be, with the right architecture. Use enterprise API tiers that contractually exclude your data from training, keep sensitive records in your own infrastructure and retrieve them at query time rather than fine-tuning on them, and log what was sent. Consumer chatbot accounts are not appropriate for confidential data.
The distinction that matters is between consumer products and API access. Enterprise API terms from the major providers generally state that submitted data is not used for training and is retained only briefly for abuse monitoring. Consumer tiers often differ.
Architecturally, retrieval beats fine-tuning for confidential data. Keep records in your own database, fetch only what a query needs, and send that. Nothing sensitive ends up baked into model weights you cannot audit or delete from.
For regulated data — health records especially — that means BAAs with providers, private endpoints, audit logging, and a considered retention policy. We build HIPAA-conscious systems this way as standard.
