AI Coding Tools
Should I use Base44 or build custom software?
Short answer
Use an AI app builder like Base44 to validate an idea fast or run an internal tool with few users. Build custom when the software is the business — when you need real integrations, control over your data, predictable costs at scale, or the freedom to leave. Many teams sensibly do both, in that order.
AI app builders are genuinely useful. Getting something clickable in front of users in days rather than months is worth a great deal, and for internal tools the trade-offs rarely bite.
They bite when the product succeeds. Common walls: an integration the platform does not support, per-seat pricing that stops making sense at scale, compliance requirements you cannot satisfy without controlling the infrastructure, and a performance ceiling you cannot engineer around.
The pragmatic sequence is to prototype on a builder, learn what the product actually needs, then rebuild the parts that matter on foundations you own. What you learn in the prototype makes the custom build cheaper and better-aimed.
The question we would ask first: if this platform doubled its price or shut down, what happens to your business? If the answer is 'not much', use the builder.
